Net Zero Minister inspires students

On 15 May, students from Y7-12 took part in a Q&A session with Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, alongside Deputy Mayor of London for Environment and Energy, Mete Coban MBE.

The Minister was visiting the school to take a look at our sustainable heat pump, alongside several Government partners and Camden Council Leader, Richard Olszewski.

The students asked thoughtful and challenging questions, and represented the school with great maturity and insight. The session gave students a deeper understanding of the UK’s journey towards Net Zero, and opened up conversations about career pathways and opportunities in the green economy, as well as further sustainability plans within the school infrastructure.

The visit was fun. We learned a lot about climate change and what the school has done to help reduce its impact. One thing that stood out to me was when they explained that they had installed a new heating system. It made me wonder – why don’t they add a cooling system too? After all, we don’t need heating in the summer.

So, I asked them what they plan to do for the summer since the school doesn’t have air conditioning. I suggested that if they just added a function to the heating system to make the air cooler instead of warmer, it could solve the issue. They agreed that this was the idea, but said it would cost a lot of money to implement.

Kevin's conversation with the Minister was interesting as it highlighted our existing plans for the Assembly Hall, subject to funding.
