Attendance and Punctuality

Focus on Attendance and Punctuality

Research has shown that regular attendance and good punctuality are crucial factors in students achieving their full potential in education.

At Acland Burghley School we wish to work in partnership with parents and carers and so are seeking your full support in ensuring that your child attends school every day and on time. We are always pleased to work together with parents/carers in resolving any difficulties but we are also committed to improving attendance levels at the school.

Please find below the government guideline, helping you decide whether you should keep your child off school.

Attendance award

We are very proud of our FFT National Attendance Award for being in the top 25% of schools nationally for attendance in Spring and Autumn terms 2023.

Coughs and colds

It's fine to send your child to school with a minor cough or common cold. But if they have a fever, keep them off school until the fever goes.

Encourage your child to throw away any used tissues and to wash their hands regularly.

NHS Guidance: Is my child too ill for school?

High temperature

If your child has a high temperature, keep them off school until it goes away.

COVID-19

If your child has mild symptoms, such as a runny nose, sore throat, or slight cough, and feels well enough, they can go to school.

Your child should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people if they have symptoms of COVID-19 and they either:

  • have a high temperature
  • do not feel well enough to go to school or do their normal activities

What to do if your child has tested positive

Your child is no longer required to do a COVID-19 rapid lateral flow test if they have symptoms. But if your child has tested positive for COVID-19, they should try to stay at home 3 days after testing positive. They can come back to school, if they feel better.

Attendance anxiety

Being in school and having the best attendance possible underpins all the many benefits of school not just children’s learning but their wellbeing and wider development. But, for some children, attending school every day will be harder than for others.

Please speak to your child's Tutor or Year Team Leader if your child is experiencing anxiety about attending school.

Medical and dental appointments

We encourage parents to avoid making medical and dental appointments within school hours where possible. If the appointment is made in school time, please make sure your child attends school before and after their appointment time. A proof of the appointment may be required. Please use the contacts below to inform the school of medical or dental appointments in advance of the appointment where possible.

Attendance and Punctuality Policy
