At Acland Burghley we believe that every child has the potential to be successful in their use and application of mathematical skills. We aim to nourish and grow enthusiastic mathematicians who feel confident in their reasoning skills and know how to apply their mathematical knowledge in new and challenging situations. Harnessing their problem-solving and logical thinking skills from primary school and developing them further using a range of techniques and strategies. 

This is achieved through a robust and diverse curriculum which will engage, stretch and motivate students to broaden and deepen their thinking and understanding, whilst forming links between differing areas of maths and other subjects. Many of these strategies look to identify misconceptions within students thinking and to re-establish clear steps and understanding around core fundamentals. The Maths faculty are a team of maths specialists who all understand the value of an excellent maths education and the doors that it can open further down the line. Incorporating regular opportunities for retrieval practice throughout their 5-year journey enables students to recall and apply mathematical concepts confidently and coherently both inside and outside of the classroom.  

The curriculum map in the Ks4 section for both Higher and Foundation students show how students build upon the fundamental concepts of mathematics as they progress through KS3 and KS4.

At Acland Burghley School our intent with our mathematics curriculum is to harness students’ problem-solving and logical thinking skills, developing them further using a range of techniques and strategies. In Y7, students will cover the following units:

Every end of unit assessment lasts 55 minutes, whilst mid unit assessments last 40 minutes (these do not occur during every unit).

Students at Acland Burghley start off in mixed attainment groups in Y7 for the first term, after which we group students to be able to better provide further support and extension. These groups are regularly reviewed with the view of providing the best platform for every student to thrive, succeed and prepared to start their journey in KS4.

KS4

Curriculum Intent and Map

After students have completed their introduction to the foundations of each strand of mathematics Number, Algebra, Geometry and Statistics at KS2 and KS3, they continue to deepen their comprehension at KS4. Developing a strong understanding around how each of these strands relates to the next. Not only helping students to master the individual concepts, but to also help them realise the beautiful way in which mathematical concepts can be combined to help solve unfamiliar problems.

In Y10 and Y11 students follow either the Foundation or Higher pathway.

  • Foundation Maths GCSE, Edexcel: grade 5-1
  • Higher Maths GCSE, Edexcel: grades 9-1

Both pathways follow the same structure, building on KS3 knowledge, and are assessed through three 90-minute all-encompassing exams at the end of year 11.

There is no differentiation on how content will be assessed on each paper, and their whole respective curriculums can be covered in any of the three papers for both Higher and Foundation students. 

Both pathways involve students being able to apply their knowledge in unfamiliar contexts, being assessed on how well they can break down the question, demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of key mathematical concepts. By the time students have left year 11, we aim for them to have become methodical in their approaches to attacking unfamiliar problems with confidence in their mathematical expertise. This is facilitated by the sequencing of concepts in both pathways, allowing students the opportunity to continually build on their prior knowledge of mathematics and its applications.

KS5

Curriculum

At Acland Burghley we believe that maths is for everybody and so we have pathways available for all students at Ks5. We offer A-level maths and further maths (Edexcel), Level 2 Maths studies (AQA) and resit GCSE maths for students who haven't achieved a grade 4 in year 11. 

A Level Maths and Further Maths (Edexcel)

During their first year, students will further develop their understanding of Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Statistics from GCSE whilst also be introduced to more challenging topics such as Methods of Proof, Calculus and Mechanics. These concepts will then be studied in more detail in the second year of the course, allowing the students to apply mathematics in other fields of study, be aware of the relevance of mathematics to the world of work and to situations in society in general and use their mathematical skills and techniques to solve challenging problems that require them to decide on the solution strategy. Students will learn to reason logically to make deductions and inferences and draw appropriate conclusions. The entry requirements are grade 8+, 

Passionate and highly able students can undergo the Further Mathematics A Level qualification alongside the mathematics course, enabling them to extend their range of mathematical skills and techniques even further. Topics covered in the Further Maths course include, but are not limited to Complex Numbers, Matrices and Differential Equations, Further Mechanics and Decision.

 

Level 2 Maths Studies (AQA)

Maths studies is an ideal course for students who are wanting to continue learning and developing their understanding of mathematics beyond GCSE, but in a real-life context, rather than the more abstract algebraic content which is covered throughout the A-level course. Students will learn how to calculate tax codes based on salaries, determine how much student loan repayments will cost and look into mortgages, interest rates and project planning to name a few.  Covering many of the real - life applications of maths beyond sixth form. It is an ideal course for students wanting to impress employers by ensuring their maths skills are kept fresh in the two years they are still studying after GCSE, without wanting to sit the full A-level which is less applicable to day-to-day practices. The entry requirements are a 4+ in maths GCSE.

 

GCSE Resit (Edexcel)

Resit students will be covering a condensed version of the two-year foundation curriculum offered to our Ks4 students. They will re-cover the key concepts of the GCSE curriculum to help them consolidate their learning and work through any misconceptions they may have had in year 11. There will be two opportunities to resit each year, the first being in November, and then the second being in July with the year 11 cohort.

Why study Maths A Level?

Studying mathematics at A-Level provides a robust foundation for all scientific, technical, engineering and mathematical careers, as well as help develop useful and transferable skills like critical thinking, problem solving, construct logical arguments, time management and independence.

People with maths degrees and other qualifications can go into accounting, medicine, engineering, finance, business, consultancy, teaching, IT, games development, scientific research, programming, the civil service, design, construction, and astrophysics to name a few.
